Four Ways to Beat Stress at Work

Whether you are employed or you are your own boss, work can be stressful. When we spend so much of our lives at work, it makes sense to make it a place where you are happy to be. Unfortunately, many people feel unhappy in their jobs for a variety of reasons, and this causes stress that can be detrimental to health and well-being. If you are feeling stressed at work, try these tips to help reduce it and give you a happier work life.

1. Identify the Issues

There may be one obvious problem that makes you feel stressed at work, or it could be a combination of things. In order to sort through them and make progress, you first need a clear picture of what is not working for you. Make a list of all the things that make you feel stressed at work, and begin by tackling the small issues that are quick to fix. For example, that squeaky door hinge that makes you cringe every time you hear it can be sorted with a little oil, making your office environment better. Just by tackling the small issues, it gives you the motivation to work on the more difficult.

2. Speak Out

What is it about your work processes that cause you the most stress? You are in the best position to know how to do things better, so discuss ideas with your team or your boss. Push for change if you need it. If you don’t speak out about what is stressful about your job, it will never get better. Have the confidence to stand up for yourself, and show your employer that you are a valued team member that is feeling the strain. A good boss is someone who is willing to listen and help where possible, and if they do not, then consider looking for another job.

3. Change Jobs

It is a big step to leave your current job for a new one, but if you are under chronic stress at work, then changing jobs could be the best thing for your health and well-being. Keep your CV up to date, as well as a cover letter that you can tailor for the different jobs you apply for. You can getcover letter templates online to help if you are not sure what to write. When you have a CV and cover ready to send, any time you see a job you like, you can easily apply.

4. Make Time to Unwind

If you have a stressful job, you probably take a lot of that stress home with you. It is important to set aside some time each day where you can relax and unwind, helping you to cope with stress. Whether it is a soothing bath at the end of the day, or a jog after work, having that time where you can forget your troubles makes you better able to face challenges.

If stress at work is getting you down, only you can do something about it. Make the effort to solve problems, discuss things at work, and have courage to change jobs if you need to, and you will keep stress to a minimum.
